How to Change GIF Speed in Canva

If you want to change the speed of an existing GIF in Canva, here's the honest answer: Canva doesn't support GIF frame-delay editing. You can create animations in Canva and export them as GIFs with some control over duration — but you can't upload a GIF file and change its playback speed. Here's what's actually possible, and what to use instead.

What Canva can and can't do with GIF speed

  1. 1

What Canva supports: creating animated GIFs

Build an animated design in Canva, click "Animate" in the top toolbar, choose an animation style (Fade, Pan, Rise, etc.), and set the page duration. Download as GIF to export your Canva animation.

  2. 2

    Adjusting animation duration in Canva

In the Timeline view (View → Show Timeline), drag the edge of a clip to extend or shorten it. This controls how long each element animates — longer duration means a slower, more gradual animation.

  3. 3

What Canva doesn't support: editing imported GIFs

If you upload an existing GIF to Canva, it appears in your design as-is. Canva has no controls for the frame delays inside the GIF — you can't speed it up, slow it down, or change its timing at all.

  4. 4

For existing GIFs: use a dedicated GIF editor

To change the speed of a GIF you already have, you need a tool that edits frame delay directly. GIFSpeed does this in your browser with no sign-up or software install.

Note: Canva is a design creation tool — it's not built for editing existing GIF files. Frame-level timing control requires a dedicated GIF editor.
