How to Change GIF Speed in Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop lets you change GIF speed by editing frame delays in the Timeline panel. It's the right choice if you're already editing the GIF in Photoshop — but for a simple speed adjustment, the workflow involves several steps. Here's exactly how to do it.
Step-by-step: changing GIF speed in Photoshop
- 1
Open your GIF in Photoshop
Go to File → Open and select your GIF file. Photoshop imports it as a layered document — each animation frame becomes a separate layer.
- 2
Open the Timeline panel
Go to Window → Timeline. The Timeline panel appears at the bottom of the workspace, showing each frame with its current delay time displayed below.
- 3
Select all frames
Click the first frame in the Timeline, then press Ctrl+A (Windows) or Cmd+A (Mac) to select every frame at once. Alternatively, click the Timeline menu icon (≡) and choose "Select All Frames".
- 4
Change the frame delay
Click the time value below any selected frame (e.g. "0.1 sec."). A dropdown appears with common presets. Choose a shorter delay for faster playback (0.03 sec. ≈ 33 fps) or a longer delay for slower playback (0.2 sec. = 5 fps). Select "Other..." to enter a custom value.
- 5
Export as GIF
Go to File → Export → Save for Web (Legacy). Set the format to GIF, adjust quality and dither settings as needed, then click Save.
Note: Adobe Photoshop requires a Creative Cloud subscription (from $22/month). If you only need to adjust GIF speed without other edits, this workflow is more complex than necessary for such a simple task.
